Introduction
────────────
What exactly is DNC ?
DNC is the Descriptive Notation Chess database. It is intended to be
used as a study aid for those chess players interested in improving
their game, especially during the opening phase of the game. It uses
a dynamic graphics display of a current chess position. You, as the
chess student, can attach notes to each move. These notes should
describe the reasoning behind the move. You can obtain notes on each
move from books, magazines or your own personal observations. DNC
can be thought of as the chess equivalent of a Hypertext help system.
DNC evolved from a desire to study chess openings in a much more
dynamic manner than standard printed books allow. Books designed to
teach the principles of specific chess openings usually present the
student with a single diagram for many printed moves. Sometimes
there are literally hundreds of moves per diagram. This may be
reasonable for printed books but DNC takes the diagramming idea one
step further. DNC displays the results of EACH move. This
graphically drives home the point of each move. The user sees the
results of each move immediately. There is no need to manually
shuffle pieces back and forth on a chessboard. You no longer need
to worry about losing your place in a book. You also don't need to
worry about spilling your favorite beverage onto the board and book.
Now you can sit back, relax, and worry about spilling that beverage
on the computer keyboard.
Originally, in version 1.00, DNC used only Descriptive Notation.
Thus the name. That is still its primary focus. It is also the
preferred notation of the author. Version 1.01 has been modified to
allow algebraic notation. (User pressure you see!) Some people
might claim that Descriptive Notation is outdated and that algebraic
notation is all the rage nowadays. Well, fads come and go. People
have tried to dump English in favor of Esperanto too. Look up the
definition of Esperanto in your dictionary and you'll see what we
mean.
(( Okay, so maybe by now you have detected a slight bias towards ))
(( Descriptive Notation versus algebraic. Its just a personal ))
(( preference. ))
DNC Version 1.01 October 31, 1991 Page 2
Hardware Requirements
─────────────────────
DNC should be able to run on just about any PC or compatible.
DNC requires the following standard equipment to run :
computer .............. IBM PC/XT/AT or compatible
operating system ...... MS-DOS or PC-DOS 2.0 or later
monitor ............... Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA)
memory ................ 128k free (above operating system)
disk drives ........... virtually anything
Any computer that uses MS-DOS as an operating system and is
compatible at the BIOS level with the IBM PC computers should run
DNC without any problem. DNC will work correctly when using MS-DOS
or PC-DOS version 2.0 or later.
DNC requires either an EGA or VGA adapter board and monitor.
DNC requires 128k of free memory above that required by the
operating system. This shouldn't be much of a limitation.
If your computer has and uses disk drives, chances are that they will
work without any problems with DNC.
User Requirements
─────────────────
To use DNC you should also be familiar with either the Descriptive
Notation or the algebraic notation method of recording chess moves.
You can enter moves in either form. You can easily convert the
display from one to the other with a single keystroke. If you know
one notation form you can learn about the other this way. This
document gives a brief review of both notation forms in Appendix A
and B, but does not attempt to teach all about that subject.
Additionally, you should have a desire to learn more about chess.
DNC was designed to be as easy to use as possible. Anyone should
be able to use it whether they are a rank beginner or a master.
However, you will need a willingness to study and learn. DNC is
intended for everyone from the Class players to the Expert and even
the Master level. The notes in the database were probably
entered by players of that caliber. If you create a database with
your favorite opening, and you wouldn't mind sharing it with others,
send the four files (.DBF, .NDX, .TXT, .NTX) to Pawn Promotions Inc.
We'll be happy to include them in the next release of DNC with the
proper kudos and thank-yous attached. See the CREDITS.DNC file for
the chronological list of contributions. Please note, it is not our
intention to 'sell' databases, just the DNC program itself. It IS
our intention to give away the data.

Installing DNC
──────────────
In order to run DNC you will have to copy all the files listed in
the packing list to your working drive. That is all there is to it.
Once the files have been copied, print the documentation and start
enjoying the program. You might also want to print the TUTORIAL.DNC
file, read it and follow the directions there.
Remember, if you use the program you should register the program.
( OKAY, 'nuff said )
Conventions Used
────────────────
< > Key names are shown in angled brackets to describe a key to
press. As an example, this documentation states that
you should press <F10> to rotate the board. This means to
press the F10 key and not the letters <, F, 1, 0, and >.

└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
The main display area for DNC is the chessboard. It is a graphic
display of the current position.
Below the chessboard is the main message area. Information and
warning messages are displayed there. It is also the space used for
selecting a database and for entering moves for that database.
To the right of the board are two areas. The top area is used to
display moves. The area directly below the move list is used to
display notes about the moves.
Normally, the move list will display a list of the most recent moves;
7 for both White and Black. The current move will be highlighted.
The chessboard reflects the result of the highlighted move.
This move list area has a second purpose. It is also used to display
up to 12 alternate moves. At any time, the user may elect to choose
a different move from the alternate move list or to add a move to that
list of alternates. As with the regular move list, the currently
selected move in the alternate list will be highlighted.
The note area displays the text notes associated with the currently
highlighted move.
DNC Version 1.01 October 31, 1991 Page 5
Using DNC - The Configuration File
────────────────────────────────────
DNC uses a configuration file called DNC.CFG. By editing this file
you can change the default screen colors or the default display
notation. Each item in DNC.CFG is a single line that has an equals
sign (=) separating two key phrases. Spaces are ignored in phrases.
The phrases can be any combination of upper and lower case letters.
The equals sign is required. As an example, to set the color of the
dark squares to GREEN, put the following line in the DNC.CFG file :
Dark Squares = Green
You can change the color of any area of the screen by modifying
DNC.CFG. The following areas can be custom colorized :
WHITE PIECES MOVES
BLACK PIECES ALTERNATE MOVES
LIGHT SQUARES NOTES
DARK SQUARES MESSAGES
You can set any of those areas to the following colors :
BLACK GREY RED LIGHT RED
BLUE LIGHT BLUE MAGENTA LIGHT MAGENTA
GREEN LIGHT GREEN BROWN YELLOW
CYAN LIGHT CYAN WHITE BRIGHT WHITE
The DNC.CFG file can also be used to change the notation that is
initially displayed on startup.
DISPLAY NOTATION
The default display notation can be set to one of the following :
ENGLISH DESCRIPTIVE ENGLISH ALGEBRAIC
As an example; a partial listing of the supplied DNC.CFG file
looks like this :
White Pieces = Bright White
Black Pieces = Black
Light Squares = Green
Dark Squares = Brown
Display Notation = English Descriptive
If you delete the DNC.CFG file the DNC program will use the default
settings; Descriptive Notation and all colors in shades of gray.

Using DNC - Selecting a Database
──────────────────────────────────
If you have not read the TUTORIAL.DNC text file, you might want to
do so now. This manual is easier to understand if you have read
and run the tutorial.
When you first start DNC you will see a prompt; "Enter Filename :".
You are being asked to enter the name of a database to use. Enter
the complete filename of the database, including any drive and path
components. As an example; to use the Tarrasch database included
with the DNC v1.01 package, type TARRASCH at the prompt.
Hitting <ESC> at the filename prompt will exit back to DOS.
Once you have entered the name of a previously created file, you will
be in the move list area. See the following section labeled "Stepping
through the Move List".
If the filename you specified does not exist, you will be given three
choices:
- You can hit the <A> key to 'Abort'. This means that you will be
prompted for the filename again. You can re-enter a new filename
or hit escape to exit to DOS.
- You can can hit the <R> key to 'Retry'. This is handy if you are
loading the databases from diskette and you don't have the right
one in the disk drive at the moment.
- Or you can hit the <C> key to 'Create' the database files. They
will be created on the drive and path specified.
If you plan on using DNC extensively you should create multiple
subdirectories for the various database files. DNC will not
create subdirectories if they do not already exist. That is up to
the user. However, it will create the four DNC database and index
files once you have created the subdirectory. Each of the four
files created will have the same filename with different extensions.
The four example database files included with DNC v1.01 are :
TARRASCH.DBF, TARRASCH.NDX, TARRASCH.TXT and TARRASCH.NTX.
You can be returned to the filename prompt from the move list. If
so, you will see the filename that you entered before. If the file
you choose is the same as before, you will be returned to the start
of the move list with the old move list intact.
DNC Version 1.01 October 31, 1991 Page 7
Using DNC - Stepping through the Move List
────────────────────────────────────────────
The move list is the area to the right of the chessboard. It can
display up to 7 moves each for White and Black.
When you initially get here from entering a database file name, you
will be presented with a display that looks like this :
--------- ---------
1
2
3
4
5
6
There are 3 columns to the display. The leftmost is the move number.
The middle one is White's moves. The righmost is Black's moves.
On first entry to the move list the dashes in White's move column
will be highlighted. That is the way it is supposed to be. It is
for internal housekeeping purposes. Hit the down arrow once. The
dashes above Black's moves will now be highlighted. Hit the down
arrow an additional time and you are now in the move list proper.
The following is a list of keys used to navigate through the move
list.
<Up>, <Down>
Use the arrow keys to step through the move list.
First, White's move will be highlighted. Hit the down arrow key.
Black's move is now highlited. Hit the down arrow again. Now
White's next move is highlighted. In this way you can step forward
through the moves in the selected database. The display in the move
list area will scroll as needed.
If you hit the down arrow and there is no next move listed, DNC
will do one of two things. If there is only one alternate move
available, it will be selected and displayed. If there are multiple
alternates available, DNC switches to the alternate move selection.
Once an alternate move has been selected, it is added to the current
move list and the process continues.
Use the up arrow to step backwards through the list.
If you exit from the alternate move selection without actually
selecting a move, the move list remains unchanged.
DNC Version 1.01 October 31, 1991 Page 8
Stepping through the Move List (continued)
───────────────────────────────────────────
<Enter>
Use <Enter> to switch to the alternate move selections. See the
following section titled "Selecting an Alternate Move". Once an
alternate move has been selected, it is made the current move in
the move list. The move list is adjusted to reflect the new move
sequence.
If you exit from the alternate move selection without actually
selecting a move, the move list remains unchanged.
<ESC>
Hitting the escape key while in the move list will return to the
prompt for a database filename. See the previous section labeled
"Selecting a database".
<F1>
This is the "help" key. Use it to see an online list of available
keystrokes. It is just a quick reminder of this list.
<F8>
This key moves the cursor to the note area. See the section labeled
"Entering Notes". <ESC> will return to this move list.
<F9>
You can use this key to change the display from Descriptive Notation
to algebraic and back.
<F10>
Used to rotate the chessboard 180 degrees. It also changes the
chessboard border.
<Space>
This will temporarily undo the currently highlighted move. Hit the
space bar a second time to redo the move. It is a handy way to show
the highlighted move. There is no problem if you don't hit the space
bar a second time. The effects of the space bar are only temporary.
DNC Version 1.01 October 31, 1991 Page 9
Using DNC - Selecting an Alternate Move
─────────────────────────────────────────
You get to the alternate move list from the regular move list by
hitting <Enter> on a currently displayed move or by hitting the down
arrow to a blank move. The alternate move list is a list of alternate
moves that can be played at this position. This list displays in the
same space as the regular move list. This list displays up to 12
alternate moves for whichever player's turn it is. The column heading
is "Alternate Moves" followed by the turn number and the color to move.
A double row of moves follows the heading.
Use the arrow keys to move the highlight cursor to the move you want
and then hit <Enter> to return to the regular move list.
If you down arrow to a blank move, you will be prompted for a move.
The following is a list of the keys used to navigate through the
alternate move list.
<Up>, <Down>
Use the arrow keys to step through the alternate move list.
The highlight cursor moves just like it does for the regular move
list. The cursor moves from column to column while moving back and
forth through the list. The display in not scrolled.
If you hit the down arrow and there is no next move listed, you
you will be prompted for a move. You can enter the move in either of
the accepted notations. The move is checked for legality. If it is
a legal move it is added to the list and becomes a permanent part of
the alternate move list. The move is displayed in the current default
notation. (see the <F9> notes) If there are no alternate moves
available on entry to the alternate move list, you will be prompted
for a move right away.
<Enter>
Use <Enter> to select the currently highlighted alternate move.
The alternate move becomes the current move in the regular move list.
The move list is adjusted to reflect the new move sequence.
If the move you select is the same as the one in the regular move
list, you exit from the alternate move selection without changing
the regular move list.
<ESC>
Hitting the escape key from here will return to the regular move list
without selecting an alternate move. If you exit from the alternate
move selection without actually selecting a move, the regular move
list remains unchanged. See the previous section labeled "Stepping
through the Move List".
DNC Version 1.01 October 31, 1991 Page 10
Selecting an Alternate Move (continued)
─────────────────────────────────────────
<F1>
This is the "help" key. Use it to see an online list of available
keystrokes.
<F8>
This key moves the cursor to the note area. See the section labeled
"Entering Notes". <ESC> will return to the alternate move list.
<F9>
You can use this key to change the display from Descriptive Notation
to algebraic and back.
<F10>
Used to rotate the chessboard 180 degrees. It also changes the
chessboard border.
<Space>
This will temporarily undo the currently highlighted move.
Hitting the space bar a second time will redo the move. It is
a handy way to show the highlighted move.
<Alt-D>
Deletes the current alternate move. The alternate move list is
redisplayed. This key can be used to eliminate poor alternatives
or mistakes in entering moves. However, we recommend that you
rarely use this key. Mistakes can be very educational. You cannot
delete the alternate move if it is the only one available.
DNC Version 1.01 October 31, 1991 Page 11
Using DNC - Entering Notes
────────────────────────────
The note area is a 30 character by 13 line space. It is not
a scrollable note pad.
The following is a list of the keys used to navigate through the
note area.
<ESC>
The escape key at this point will return to the move list. See the
previous section labeled "Stepping through the Move List".
<Up>, <Down>, <Left>, <Right>
Use the cursor keys to move around inside the note space.
<PgUp>, <PgDn>, <Home>, <End>
These keys move the cursor to the edges of the note. They move to
the top, bottom, left and right edges respectively.
<Enter>
The enter key drops the cursor down one line and to the left edge.
<Ins>
Inserts a blank character at the cursor position. The rest of the
line is pushed to the right. The previous rightmost character is lost.
<Del>
Deletes the character under the cursor. The rest of the current
line is collapsed. A blank character appears at the end of the line.
<Alt-K>
Blanks all characters from the cursor to the end of the current line.
<Alt-I>
Insert a blank line. All lines from the cursor to the bottom of the
note are pushed down one line. The previous bottom line is discarded.
<Alt-D>
Deletes the current line. All lines below the cursor are scrolled up
one line. The bottom line is blanked.

Appendix A - Descriptive Notation
───────────────────────────────────
DNC assumes the player has some knowledge about either the
Descriptive Notation (DN) or algebraic notation (AN) form of
recording chess moves. This Appendix shows examples of the
various forms of DN input that are acceptable to DNC.
Descriptive Notation is also known as English Descriptive notation.
Ranks are numbered from the perspective of the player making the
move. White's 1st rank is Black's 8th and vice versa. A file is
labeled based on which piece initially occupies it. Examples are
the King file or the Rook file. There are 2 each of the Bishop,
Knight and Rook files. Sometimes specifying just the file by itself
is ambiguous. In these situations you may need to modify the file by
adding which side the file is on. As examples, if specifying just
the file is not enough, you may need to refer to the King Knight (KN)
or the Queen Rook (QR). DN requires either a dash (-) or exx (x)
separator between the source and destination specifier. An exx
means a capture move. A dash means a simple, non-capture move.
DNC accepts input in the following DN forms :
Examples of simple piece moves and captures :
P-K4 PxP RPxP QN-Q2
N-KB3 RxN PxKP QRPxP
Examples of piece-on-square moves and captures :
(use these when the simpler forms are insufficient)
N/2-K3 QxR/K3 RxQ/KB3
Castling Kingside, Castling Queenside :
O-O O-O-O
Pawn 'in passing' captures :
PxP ep
Pawn Promotions (not the company, the movee) :
If you somehow developed an opening that involves a pawn
promotion, please let us and the rest of the world know about
your innovation. It certainly would be, unusual. You are more
likely to encounter a pawn promotion if you use DNC to store
a complete game. If a pawn reaches the 8th rank, you will be
prompted for the piece you want the pawn to promote to.
If DNC rejects your move as illegal, make sure the move really is
legal. Then try one or more different ways of stating the move as
shown in the examples above. If DNC rejects your move as ambiguous,
just be more specific.
DNC Version 1.01 October 31, 1991 Page 13
Appendix B - algebraic notation
─────────────────────────────────
This Appendix shows examples of the various forms of algebraic
notation (AN) that are acceptable to DNC.
Ranks are always numbered from White's perspective. Files are
labeled alphabetically a-h starting at White's Queen Rook file.
AN does not use a separator for simple non-cpature moves. AN does
not require an exx (x) when specifying a capture, but it is usually
used. DNC accepts input in the following AN forms :
Examples of Examples of
